Kindness is easy when you understand the why behind the what.
One evening on my way home, I saw a woman at a bus stop doing something that looked strange and honestly uncomfortable. She kept pacing back and forth, talking to herself, clutching her bag tightly. Every few seconds, she would check the road nervously, then move away from people who tried to stand close to her.
I remember thinking, Why is she acting like this?
Is she trying to draw attention?
Why can’t she just stand normally like everyone else?
Without knowing it, I had already judged her.
A few minutes later, the bus arrived and we both got in. She sat close to the window, still restless, still alert. Someone beside me whispered, “She’s weird.” I nodded quietly, even though something in me felt uneasy.
Then the truth came out.
A phone rang. She answered it with shaking hands and a trembling voice. I overheard her say, “I’m almost there please don’t move him yet i don't on’t know if I’ll make it on time.”
Later, I found out she had just left the hospital. Her young son had been rushed into emergency, and she was told his condition could change at any moment. She wasn’t acting strange she was scared. She wasn’t seeking attention she was holding herself together the best way she could.
In that moment, my heart sank.
I felt ashamed of how quickly I had judged her based on a few minutes of observation. I realized how human it is to see actions and create stories that are not true. How easily we forget that people are carrying heavy loads we cannot see.
That day taught me something important: what looks abnormal to us may be someone’s coping mechanism. What feels strange may be someone’s silent cry for strength. And what we judge in seconds may have taken them years of pain to endure.
Kindness becomes natural when we pause long enough to ask why. When we choose empathy over assumptions. When we remember that every person we meet is fighting a battle we know nothing about.
God, please no matter how complicated or weird the situation might be, help me not to be quick in drawing conclusions. 🙏🙏🙏
