The University of Ilorin marked its 50th anniversary with a colourful celebration that featured a special appearance by Son of Iron, one of the most talked-about rising entertainers on campus. His performance added energy and excitement to the Golden Jubilee event, drawing loud cheers from students and guests who had gathered to celebrate UNILORIN’s five decades of growth, achievement, and cultural impact.
The Vice Chancellor graced the event to honour the celebration, adding prestige to the occasion. The movie also showcased top Nollywood stars such as Rykardo Agbor as Ogunrotimi, Sola Sobowale, Adebowale Adebayo (Mr. Macaroni), Jude Chukwuka as Olakunle’s grandfather, Tina Mba, Miracle Gabriel, Bukola Awoyemi, Jude Kosoko, and Kola Daniels. Their powerful performances brought emotional depth and intensity to the film, keeping students fully engaged from start to finish.
The movie captivated the audience from start to finish. Son of Iron tells the story of Olakunle, a gifted secondary school student with a natural talent for inventing and repairing things. His passion, however, conflicts with his father Ogunrotimi’s firm insistence that he pursue a career in law—a dream Ogunrotimi once held but never fulfilled. Coming from a long line of blacksmiths, Ogunrotimi had abandoned the family craft and left the village with the support of a lawyer he admired, shaping his belief that true success could only be found in the legal profession.
Students responded intensely to several key moments in the film, including Olakunle’s secret attendance at science classes, his courageous face-off with his father, and the tragic accident that followed shortly after he revealed his real aspirations. The emotional tension reached its peak when Ogunrotimi suffered a heart attack, leading to the film’s most moving scene: a dreamlike reunion involving Ogunrotimi, his father, and Olakunle. The heartfelt dialogue that unfolded brought clarity and reconciliation, ultimately resulting in Ogunrotimi embracing his son’s chosen future.
Many students expressed their admiration for the film after the screening. Adefila Moyinoluwa remarked, “The storyline was really good. I enjoyed every part of it, and I don’t regret watching it. I didn’t see the plot twist coming at all.”
Similarly, another student, Mubarak Giwa, emphasized the emotional ending, saying, “The movie was great. I especially loved the reunion scene between Kunle, his dad, and his grandpa.”
With its compelling storyline, powerful acting, and the involvement of renowned Nollywood stars, Son of Iron offered both entertainment and deep reflection on themes of family, identity, and pursuing one’s dreams. The screening has already been hailed as one of the standout highlights of the ongoing 50th anniversary celebration.
