Tje class received the update on Wednesday night from the GST lecturer that we are to chose one Nigerian culture and exhibit it's heritage. The course rep said he is going to set up committee to take up the task. Upon getting to school the second day, the class picked Fulani culture and when the assistant course rep broke the news to the class, we felt somehow about the Fulani culture. Where do we get the costumes, their foods, the artefacts? Omo, that's a great deal of task
Bolu: mimi, you know if it is gbagyi culture now, I can join you people to dance. It's all about shaking what your mama give you
Mimi: seriously, na to organize galala dance for the lecturer.
Then, chioma received a call from the course rep and she explained everything to him and he promised to convince the lady in charge that we picked gbagyi culture and we swing into action. The first rehearsal took place in the faculty of art( open space), some of my coursemates felt reluctant to dance complaining that they might end up on uniabuja gist blog or face of uniabuja. Mimi, happiness and chioma deliberate on the song to use and it was a banger.
Chioma: godiya, climb bed, bolu, join queue, Dera bend well
Mimi: you know your 30 marks depends on this.
Mary: gbagyi kwenu!!!
And the rehearsal was adjourned till the following day in our faculty.
On the second rehearsal, we put in much energy than the previous day and we discussed about the gbagyi foods and greeting. Same thing happened on Monday and Tuesday. On the D-Day, Wednesday, we had our 106 test early in the morning while the presentation is scheduled to be by 3pm. Waiting for Ruth and happiness to come over with the food and costumes plus the real gbagyi men, I became feeling nervous. I'm a Muslim girl and am I going to dance publicly? A thousand and one questions running on my mind.
Then, Ruth came with the costumes and fortunately for me, she provide 13 wrappers instead of 15. Then I have to let go of my own wrapper for fulfilment. Getting to the venue which is cov ground, the first batch is on going ( the huasa), followed by the yoruba, the igbo, then next is the gbagyi culture. The real gbagyi men mount stage almost nakely and the whole atmosphere changed. The lecturer was like 'are these one my students?' . The whole presentation was colourful and great and my class did the video coverage being the film department. GBAGYI is not just a tribe and culture but an hospitality in every aspects. Is it the food or the uncooked soup? Everything is wow.
GBAGYI To The World!!!!!!
