Kano Mourns Mother Who Died After Delivering Quintuplets - 3 hours ago

Residents of Kano have been thrown into mourning following the death of Hafsatu Yusuf, a young mother who passed away only hours after delivering quintuplets at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.

Hafsatu, described by neighbours as gentle and hardworking, had carried what many considered a rare and joyous pregnancy. Her delivery of five babies three boys and two girls initially sparked celebration among family members, hospital staff and the wider community, who saw the birth as a blessing.

The mood changed abruptly when complications set in soon after the delivery. According to the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Ministry of Health, Nabilusi Abubakar K/Na’isa, Hafsatu began to experience heavy, persistent bleeding that doctors struggled to control.

He explained that a team of medical personnel worked through the night to stabilise her, deploying every available intervention. Despite their efforts, the bleeding continued until she passed away in the early hours at the specialist hospital.

Her body was later taken to her family home in the Hotoro area of Kano, where she was buried in line with Islamic rites. Community members, relatives and friends gathered to pay their last respects, torn between grief over her death and concern for the five infants she left behind.

The quintuplets remain at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, where they are being monitored closely by a dedicated team of doctors and nurses. K/Na’isa confirmed that the babies are in stable condition but require sustained medical care, nutrition and close observation due to the vulnerability associated with multiple births.

Health officials and family members have appealed to the public for support, particularly with infant formula, clothing and other essential items needed to care for the newborns. The call has begun to resonate across Kano, with local groups and individuals expressing willingness to assist.

In an earlier statement, before Hafsatu’s death, the Ministry of Health had announced the successful delivery of the quintuplets and noted that both mother and babies had been placed under special care. That initial optimism has now given way to a sobering reminder of the risks surrounding childbirth, especially in high-risk pregnancies.

For many in Kano, Hafsatu’s story is a painful blend of miracle and tragedy: five new lives beginning just as one devoted mother’s life came to an end.
