Why Do We Feel Pressure To Look Perfect Before Leaving The House? - 2 hours ago

Have you ever planned to quickly step outside to buy something, only to look in the mirror and suddenly think:

“Wait. Let me at least arrange myself first.”

You were only going to buy bread.

But now you're checking your hair.

Then your clothes.

Then your face.

Then you're wondering if you should change your slippers.

Before you know it, a two-minute trip has turned into a full preparation session.

And honestly, many of us do this.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to look good. Dressing well can make us feel confident, comfortable and prepared.

But sometimes, the pressure goes beyond simply wanting to look good.

We feel like we must look good.

Social media has made this even stronger.

Every day, we see people with perfect outfits, flawless makeup, styled hair, clear skin and carefully curated photographs.

We rarely see the messy bedroom, the bad hair day, the tired face or the five outfits that were rejected before the final one appeared online.

So we begin comparing our everyday appearance with someone else's carefully selected presentation.

And then there is society.

In many Nigerian communities, people notice things.

“Ah, you just woke up?”

“What's wrong with your hair?”

“You're going out like this?”

Sometimes the comments are harmless jokes. Other times, they can genuinely affect how someone feels about themselves.

Appearance can also influence perception.

People may associate good dressing with confidence, success, professionalism or even respectability. This can make us feel that we must always present a polished version of ourselves.

But here's the thing:

You are allowed to have ordinary days.

You are allowed to go to the neighbourhood shop without doing your makeup.

You are allowed to wear simple clothes.

You are allowed to have a bad hair day.

You are allowed to look tired.

You don't have to turn every trip outside into a fashion event.

Looking good should be something you enjoy, not something you need in order to feel valuable.

There will be days when you dress up, smell amazing and step outside feeling like the main character.

There will also be days when you put on your oversized T-shirt, slippers and headscarf and just want to buy something before coming back home.

Both versions are still you.

The goal isn't to stop caring about your appearance.

It is to stop believing that your appearance determines your worth.

Sometimes, you are simply going to buy bread.

And you don't need to look perfect to do that.
