Unilorin Students Praise Nelfund Loan, Call For Faster Approval - 2wks ago

Many students at the University of Ilorin say the NELFUND student loan has helped them cover school fees and living expenses, even as some hope the approval and payment process could be quicker.

Ola, a 300-level student, said her application has been verified, but she has been waiting for approval for more than a month.

“It’s been more than a month now, still not approved,” she said. “While the loan is useful, the long waiting time can be stressful.”

Another 300-level student, who asked to remain anonymous, shared a similar experience. She said her loan has eased her fees this session, though her first application attempt was delayed because she used a fintech bank instead of a commercial bank.

“You can’t predict the payment pattern, especially for upkeep,” she said. Despite the delay, she described the loan as helpful and suggested that approval and payment timelines be more consistent.

Some students reported smoother experiences. A third 300-level student said the loan has supported both her tuition and monthly upkeep.

“It has helped in paying my fees and the monthly upkeep I receive,” she said. She recommended that NELFUND allow freshers to apply and align the loan cycle with the school calendar so students don’t miss out because of timing issues.

Another student added that the loan has made it easier for students to focus on their studies instead of worrying constantly about finances.

“Knowing that some of my fees and living costs are covered takes a huge load off my mind,” she said. “I can now plan my budget better and focus on classes.”

The NELFUND loan program, established to support Nigerian undergraduates, provides financial assistance for tuition and living expenses. Students say it has significantly eased financial pressure, especially in sessions where fees are high or unexpected costs arise. Many also highlighted that the program could benefit more students if the approval process were faster and more predictable.

Overall, students agreed that the loan has made a positive impact on campus life, but they hope NELFUND continues to improve its timelines and communication so that all eligible undergraduates can access the support they need without unnecessary delays.
