In a sweeping act of clemency, President Bola Tinubu has been granted approval by the Council of State to extend the presidential prerogative of mercy to 175 individuals, including the nationalist icon Herbert Macaulay. The decision follows recommendations from the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy and was presented to the Council by the Attorney General of the Federation.
According to Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, of the beneficiaries, 82 inmates received full pardon, 65 saw their sentences reduced, and seven death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment. While the full list has not yet been made public, other high-profile names reportedly included are former FCT minister Major Gen. Mamman Vatsa and members of the Ogoni Nine.
