“When You Remember an Assignment on Sunday Evening”

Friday: Life was good. I was vibing, eating suya, scrolling WhatsApp, ignoring my course rep’s 300 messages in the group chat. An assignment was given? Probably. But did I pay attention? Of course not. I had peace of mind.

Then Sunday evening came.

I was just relaxing, watching one random TikTok video, when someone dropped that evil reminder in the class group chat:

“Abeg hope una don do that MCM 204 assignment. Submission is Monday morning oh.”

My spirit left my body.

Assignment? Which assignment?? I scrolled up the chat like a detective. There it was. A fat, 4-question monster that had been sitting there since Friday. Waiting. Watching me ignore it like a fool.

Panic entered my bones.

I ran to my bag. No biro. No jotter. No peace. I opened my laptop like I was about to hack the CBN. NEPA chose that moment to blink. I nearly cried.

I spent the next 3 hours typing like my life depended on it. I was switching between Google, my textbook, and small prayer. I drank three sachets of pure water and whispered, “God abeg” every five minutes. My mum walked past me like, “This one no go kill himself.”

Now it’s 11:48pm. I’ve typed everything, but I still need to print it. Problem is, no printer at home. Cyber café opens by 7am. Class starts by 8am. And if I submit late? The lecturer wey no dey smile go minus 5 marks without blinking.

In conclusion: I am finished.
