Conflict & Emotional Stakes

Risk hightens tension in scenes. When there's a gamble, and the outcome may incur some implications on the plot progress, writing captures interest.

At the onset of storytelling are two things that give it weight: conflict and emotional stakes.

They go hand in hand and are complexly intertwined.

Conflict is the presence of opposition, It is the friction between desire and impediment — what a character wants and what stands in the way of getting it.

Without conflict, a story may become like still waves of a silent shore.

Nothing drives. Nothing resists.

And without resistance, there is no movement.

But conflict alone is not enough, because a story can contain conflict and still feel empty. This is where emotional stakes comes on stage.

Emotional stakes answers the question:

Why does this matter?

What is at risk if the character fails?

What is next if they succeed?

It is the difference between: a conversation and a confrontation, a random action and a moment that lingers.

When emotional stakes are present, the reader is no longer just plainly reading–Their feelings gets entangled as well.

Conflict creates tension.

Emotional stakes give that tension meaning.

Without conflict, a scene is flat.

Without the stakes, a scene is hollow.

They are the primary bearing walls of good storytelling, holding up the intensity, urgency, and emotional weight of every writing.
