It was around 11:00 p.m. when I picked up my phone to check its battery percentage. As soon as I unlocked it, I saw a notification that made my heart skip a beat: ₦38,000 had been deducted from my bank account.
For a few seconds, I could not process what I was seeing. My mind went blank. Questions raced through my head. How did this happen? Who took my money? Could I ever get it back?
In a state of panic, I went to a friend who was nearby and showed her the notification. I was distressed and on the verge of tears, convinced that I had lost a significant amount of money. While I was panicking, she remained calm. She contacted her father for advice and he suggested that I visit the bank early the next morning to lodge a complaint.
Not satisfied with just one option, she also reached out to another friend for additional help. After asking a few questions and reviewing the details of the transaction, we finally identified the source of the deduction: Duolingo.
At that moment, my disappointment deepened. I remembered signing up for what seemed like a harmless free trial and I realized that the subscription had automatically renewed. Believing there was little hope of recovering the money, I began accepting the loss. My friend, however, refused to give up.
A few minutes later, the friend she had contacted sent a link to request a refund through Google Play. I immediately filled out the required form, explained the situation, and submitted the request. To my surprise, only a short while later, I received another notification, the money had been refunded.
The relief I felt was indescribable. What had started as a night of panic ended with gratitude and thanksgiving. I thanked God for His mercy and for placing the right people around me at the right time.
Reflections
This experience taught me several important lessons.
First, free offers often come with responsibilities. Many free trials are designed to transition into paid subscriptions unless they are cancelled before the renewal date. It is important to read the terms carefully and keep track of subscription deadlines.
Second, calmness is a valuable asset during a crisis. Panic clouded my judgment, while my friend's composure allowed her to think clearly and seek practical solutions.
Third, genuine friendship reveals itself in difficult moments. True friends do not merely sympathize; they actively help in finding solutions when challenges arise.
Fourth, persistence can make the difference between loss and recovery. I had already resigned myself to losing the money, but the determination of others led to a successful outcome.
Finally, there is wisdom in seeking help. No one has all the answers. Sometimes, the quickest path to a solution is to ask those who may know more than we do.
Looking back, the experience was not just about recovering ₦38,000. It was a reminder to be more attentive, more patient under pressure and more appreciative of the people who stand by us when things go wrong.
