Nigeria Launches Nationwide Digital Farming Program to Boost Food Production

By Favour Borokinni

Nigeria has introduced a new nationwide digital farming program aimed at increasing food production and supporting local farmers, according to a recent report by AgriTech Africa (AgriTech Africa, 2026). The initiative, backed by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, is designed to improve farming practices through modern technology and data-driven solutions.

Under the new program, farmers will have access to mobile applications that provide weather forecasts, soil information, and market prices. These digital tools will help farmers make better decisions about planting, irrigation, and harvesting. Pilot projects have already started in parts of Kaduna, Ogun, and Benue states.

The system works by collecting data from satellites and local weather stations. This information is processed and sent directly to farmers through their mobile phones. Officials say this is especially important for rural communities where farmers often lack access to timely information. With accurate data, farmers can reduce crop losses and increase productivity (African Agricultural Development Report, 2026).

The benefits of the program could be significant. Increased food production may help lower food prices and reduce Nigeria’s dependence on food imports. It could also create more jobs in rural areas and improve the income of small-scale farmers. In addition, digital record-keeping can make it easier for farmers to access loans and government support.

However, experts have raised some concerns. Limited internet access in remote areas, the high cost of smartphones, and low digital literacy levels could affect the program’s success. There are also concerns about data security and the need for proper training to ensure farmers can use the technology effectively (AgriTech Africa, 2026).

Nigeria’s decision reflects a wider movement across Africa toward digital agriculture. If properly implemented, the program could strengthen food security and support economic growth. As with any new technology, its success will depend on proper funding, training, and continuous monitoring.
