Suspected Lassa Fever Claims Four Lives In Nasarawa - 3wks ago

At least four people, including two pregnant women, have died from suspected Lassa fever in the Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, health officials say. The victims reportedly showed symptoms consistent with the viral haemorrhagic disease, prompting the temporary closure of the General Hospital in Awe and isolation of several health workers as authorities intensify response efforts.

The outbreak has also sparked concern after some individuals suspected of exposure were taken to an isolation centre in Lafia, where they briefly escaped before being traced and prevented from contacting the wider public. While only one case has been officially confirmed as Lassa fever by laboratory testing, precautionary fumigation and community health measures are underway to curb further spread.

Lassa fever remains a significant public health threat in Nigeria, with hundreds of deaths nationwide reported in recent years, underscoring the importance of early detection and preventive actions during peak outbreak seasons.
