The University of Ilorin Christian Union (UCU) has celebrated its 49th anniversary, marking nearly five decades of spiritual fellowship, evangelism, and leadership development among students of the institution.
The anniversary, themed “The Days of His Glory,” featured a series of activities including massive household evangelism on Monday, a Heart Talk session with alumni on Tuesday, a solemn assembly on Thursday attended by leaders from other campus fellowships, and a thanksgiving service on Sunday.
Speaking on the fellowship’s progress in the last year, the UCU President,Akinola Precious, said the household recorded both numerical and spritual growth.
“We thank God for the growth and are trusting Him for more that will reach every member, not just the executives,” he said.
On challenges, Precious noted that not all members are interested in what God is doing, which sometimes makes it difficult to unite everyone.
“It can be a challenge getting everyone on the same page to understand God’s demands for each season,” he explained.
Speaking on this year’s anniversary theme, he said it reflects God’s direction for the fellowship.
“We saw how God’s glory wants to be seen among us and across the campus. The days ahead are for seeing God’s glory reflected in people’s lives,” he said.
As the fellowship approaches its 50th year, he credited its longevity to God and dedicated leaders.
“God has been raising leaders who labor passionately in prayer and service, ensuring the fellowship remains strong and relevant,” he added.
Speaking with an alumnus of the fellowship, Emmanuel Elikpim, described UCU as influential in shaping his spiritual and personal development.
“ I learned leadership skills, patience, emotional intelligence, and how to execute programs that meet the needs of people. It taught me faith and dependence on God, especially in leadership, where I had to make decisions for others in difficult circumstances,”he said.
He added that the fellowship has continued to make an impact and shape lives beyond campus.
“They say don’t just pass through UCU, let UCU pass through you. For those who do, it impacts academics, ministry, and skills development. Members learn new skills, serve sacrificially, and grow in ways that benefit them long after leaving the fellowship,” he explained.
Founded in 1976, the Unilorin Christian Union remains one of the major interdenominational fellowships on the university campus, committed to evangelism, discipleship, and Christian unity.
