This is a picture I took today at Kola Road.
To be honest, I have always had a good impression of Lagos State. However, today I feel disappointed.
The issue of waste management still needs to be seriously addressed in Lagos State. This is not the only place where refuse is dumped like this. Areas such as Ilepo Market, Mushin, or Ojuelegba (I am not really sure of the exact place 🤔), and even the Island, are not exempt.
As Nigerians, we are often quick to point fingers at the government and blame them for incompetence. However, what is shown in this picture is not entirely the fault of the government. Many Nigerians are used to disposing of their waste anywhere, anytime, and anyhow.
Whenever some people finish consuming a product, they throw the waste directly on the road, and this is unacceptable.
Another thing Nigerians need to understand is that paying your utility bills is part of your duty. As humans, we dispose of waste because, one way or the other, we consume one product or another. Now, after consumption and disposing of your waste, you expect Sanwo-Olu or Tinubu to come and help you pay your LAWMA bill, right?
Ehhn, the Sanwo-Olu that was not there when you were consuming orÃsirÃsi.
And of course, as Nigerians, because we believe we are smart, we know how to find our way around things. We then resort to dumping our refuse by the roadside in the middle of the night when no one is watching. Ahn ahn haba, it’s not fair naaaa.
We still need to do more as Nigerians. We need to do a lot better, honestly. Please, let’s be guided. If we are seeking change and a better Nigeria, we need to start first. The change begins with me and you.
A word is enough for the wise.
