Panic has gripped residents of the Funbi Fagun area in Ondo West Local Government as unknown assailants invaded the residence of a serving police officer and brutally killed her younger sister.
The victim, 27-year-old Faith Olusesan, was attacked inside the home of her elder sister, DSP Helen Adetowubo, a serving officer of the Nigeria Police Force. Faith was said to have just returned from the market, where she had gone to buy foodstuffs for the family, when the killers struck.
Witnesses and security sources disclosed that the attackers, whose number has not been confirmed, gained access to the compound by scaling an unprotected section of the barbed-wire fence. Armed with machetes and other dangerous weapons, they reportedly lay in wait inside the premises until Faith walked in.
She was then ambushed and repeatedly hacked on different parts of her body, leaving her in a pool of blood. By the time family members and neighbours rushed in, she was found lifeless on the floor.
DSP Adetowubo reportedly told investigators that about an hour before the incident, she received a text message from a friend of her nephew, warning that Faith’s life was in danger. The sender’s identity has not yet been made public, and it remains unclear whether the message is directly linked to the attack.
Family sources revealed that Faith had been making final preparations to travel abroad in search of better opportunities and was expected to leave the country in the coming weeks. Her killing has fuelled speculation that she may have been deliberately targeted.
Detectives from the Funbi Fagun Division, led by Divisional Police Officer Adenibuyan Olanrewaju, inspected the scene and discovered that one of the windows leading to the parlour had been forced open, suggesting the assailants may have broken in earlier to search for the victim or valuables.
Police confirmed that the corpse was evacuated and deposited at the General Hospital, Ondo, while a full-scale investigation is underway. A suspect, who was almost lynched by enraged friends and relatives of the deceased, was rescued by operatives of the Amotekun Corps and handed over to the police.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Akure, as authorities work to unravel the motive behind the killing and identify all those involved.
