It sounds like a simple question.
“Where are you now?”
But it never feels simple.
It pulls you into comparison you didn’t sign up for. Suddenly you’re thinking about timelines—who graduated first, who got a job, who started a business, who moved ahead.
And quietly, you start measuring your life against people who are not even on your exact path.
What most people don’t say is that life doesn’t move evenly. Some people get early wins. Some struggle longer before anything changes. Some look behind but are actually building something stronger than it appears.
The pressure comes when you forget that progress is not a race with synchronized milestones.
So instead of asking “Where are you now compared to others?” maybe the better question is:
“Am I moving at all from where I used to be?”
Because that’s the only comparison that stays honest.
